Succulent Cakes

Retail Design and Art Direction play a huge part in graphic design, visual communication and marketing. Pop up/ temporary structures for retail are also on-trend at the moment, with many businesses offering a pop-up version at events such as Summer festivals and Christmas markets. Through this project, I designed a pop up moveable cup-cake shop, with the following elements:

Make it stand out.

To tie in with the brand ‘Succulent Cakes’ the stand was inspired by the style of a large garden trolley with rows of planters to display the cakes.
I wanted to make use of the universities metal workshop and develop my hands-on crafting skills further. The initial concept design was mocked up using CAD, and then production began on the build.

Design and Plan.

Rough sketches to define the dimensions of the cart. I managed to source some old bicycle wheels from gumtree (thankfully no reinventing of the wheel needed!).

Build and Weld

Once the dimensions were finalised, I began the process of cutting the steel to size, welding it together (with some workshop team assistance) and then using the angle grinder smoothed down any rough edges.

Finalise Structure

I decided to keep the weight of the cart down and allow for it to be easily transported to clad it with plywood. Not only is it light but also affordable and easier to work with as a newbie to the workshop.
